Understanding the ‘manosphere’ and its influence on offline behaviour

Course overview

  • The Netflix show Adolescence has spotlighted many challenges that schools and young people face today, particularly the real-world influence of online misogyny. But beyond the television drama, what do scientists actually know about figures like Andrew Tate, the messages they promote, and their methods for reaching young audiences? This course will explore research findings on the content adolescents consume and discuss expert-recommended strategies to counter these harmful narratives without unintentionally reinforcing them.

    • The nature and impact of online misogyny on young people, including insights from research studies of the manosphere and influencers like Tate.

    • How online content transitions from digital spaces to real-world behaviours, examining its effects on schools and different genders.

    • Key strategies to avoid when addressing these issues, along with effective approaches to help young people critically engage with the content they encounter.
